Three separate amounts to understand
A low rental price is not enough if your card cannot cover the supplier’s security deposit. For Kos car hire, check the rental terms attached to the exact vehicle and supplier before paying. Online payment and the deposit at pickup are separate checks. A card accepted during booking may not be accepted by the rental supplier.
Booking price
What you pay online and what remains payable at collection.
Temporary hold
The supplier may block funds on the main driver’s eligible card.
Damage exposure
This is the amount you may owe under the cover terms, subject to exclusions.
Local charges
Seats, extra drivers, fuel differences and late returns may change the final cost.
Can you use a debit card?
Do not rely on a general “cards accepted” badge. VIPCars says most suppliers require an eligible credit card in the main driver’s name for the refundable deposit and directs travellers to the offer’s Rental Terms for any other accepted method. Its debit-card guidance does not identify a Kos supplier accepting debit cards.
Check whether the card is credit or debit, whether the supplier accepts that scheme, the required available limit, the driver-name rule and whether a physical card is needed. If any point is unclear, obtain written confirmation from the booking provider or supplier before payment. A debit card used online may still be rejected at collection.
“No deposit” needs proof in the exact offer
No-deposit inventory cannot be inferred from a search phrase or a third-party cover product. VIPCars states that its Full Protection Cover can still leave a credit-card deposit at the desk: see its deposit guidance. Seek an explicit zero-deposit term for the selected supplier, dates and car if that is essential to your trip.
The deposit is a hold or security amount; the excess is the potential charge after covered damage. They need not match. Read the cover exclusions, such as tyres, glass, underbody, keys and prohibited roads, in the actual rental terms. An external reimbursement policy can require you to pay the supplier first and claim later.
Before booking
Save the rental terms that show the deposit, card type, excess and local balance for the exact offer.
At collection
Bring the main driver’s documents and eligible card. Confirm the deposit hold and condition report.
After return
Keep the signed return record and card statement. Ask the supplier about any unreleased hold or disputed charge.
Make a fair total-cost comparison
Filter out offers that cannot accept your actual card, then compare the remaining deposit hold and excess side by side. Do this before ranking them by rental price: the lowest daily rate is unusable if the required card or limit is unavailable.
If your card cannot meet the published terms, do not book in the hope of an exception at the desk. Return to Kos Airport pickup or hotel delivery comparisons only after you can verify a suitable offer. Our price-checking guide gives a reusable quote worksheet.
Kos car hire deposits and payment cards FAQs
Does prepaid rental mean no deposit?
No. The supplier may still require a separate security deposit and a card in the main driver’s name.
Will extra cover remove the hold?
Do not assume that. Check whether cover changes the supplier’s own excess and deposit or only reimburses later.
How quickly is a deposit released?
The supplier and card issuer determine the release and posting time. Keep your return paperwork and ask the supplier for the hold reference if delayed.
